What is a Mind Map or Brainstorm

A Mind map or brainstorm is a powerful tool to have. They can be used to express your thoughts, generate ideas and organise information and even more importantly when studying they are an excellent memory tool. They work in a similar way to our brain –building a network of ideas and relationships between those ideas.

Here is an example of a published mind map. The first draft would not have been so pretty as the emphasis is on getting ideas down quickly.

Here are some more examples of published mind maps done by older students, but the process is just the same for younger students, just simplified. When students learn how to do a mind map it is important that it is modeled for them several times before having a go at it on their own and it is most essential that the teacher is the scribe for younger learners:
