The purpose of a Reading Log is to keep a record to celebrate achievement and progress. A log also serves as a record.  Each time students fill out their log “comment” you can ask them one of the below listed questions.
Many of these questions are for middle primary and up. Younger students may answer these questions orally or with parent assistance to have ago at these comments. The point of this activity is to develop students critical reasoning and thinking skills and to increase their knowledge of writing. Please print out a copy of these questions for the from of students Reading Log files.

 

  • Describe one of the characters and what you like or do not like about them?
  • Describe how the book made you feel.
  • Out line briefly what has happened.
  • Make a list of adjectives (describing words from the last chapter).
  • Record and look up the meaning of any words that you did not know the meaning of.
  • Choose a paragraph of the story that you found interesting or exciting and rewrite without the discriptive words or details.
  • Choose and write in the comments section an example of description that the Author has used that you liked. Identify whether the author is using similes, metaphors or personification?
  • Write briefly what you think will happen next?
  • Describe what you think is the authors message, what are they trying to communicate to the world through the book? E.g. Jenny, the main character is facing her challenges and fear of heights and I think the author is encouraging readers to not be fearful and trust God to overcome their own fears.
  • Write what you liked about the book.
