Camp in the NW QLD While employed at a previous DE School, I was privileged to lead the Clermont Camp. Upon arrival my wife Vanessa and three children we were greeted by excited students and their welcoming parents. There was a real sense of anticipation and friendship right from the start. We began with a prayer and by singing the national anthem together, and then we were off on a cross country tramp. All along the way we studied the geography, collected bugs, stones and anything of interest. We crossed a river by canoe, but most of us enjoyed a cool muddy swim. We spent the afternoon down by a beautiful lily pad covered lagoon. The students and I enjoyed many drama games, songs and team building activities under the shade. We camped in the bush, cooked damper and enjoying the camp fire games and singing. One morning students worked in teams to complete a fantastic obstacle course that Mr. and Mrs. Shilvock had put together on their farm. There was a variety of challenges and it was great to see the students working so well together, caring and sharing and living their faith.
Students also enjoyed kayaking, swimming and sports. They constructed large water rockets, towers, submarines, origami birds and planes, geometric shapes, compasses and fly catchers. They also made ice cream and lots of friends. The students all got along beautifully and many strong friendships were forged. It is also important to acknowledge the leadership skills that were evident and emerging throughout the week. There was a wonderful camp concert on the last night and it was obvious that each family had put in a top effort planning and practicing their items. My highlight was to see the student so keen to learn about God and his wonderful creation. I have so many special memories and funny stories to tell, but most of all my family has many new friends that we will never forget.
Finally, I would like to thank the parents that worked so hard to make the camp possible. Special thanks goes to Brenda Shilvock who was our lead coordinator for this successful event. |
